Another unique type of project is the renovation of a historically significant building. Sometimes buildings are listed on the National or State Register of Historic Buildings if it was designed or built by a famous person, represents a particular type of construction during the time it was built, or is the location of an important event in the history of the city, state, or nation. The goal of the historic register is to maintain the aspects of a building’s appearance, materials, and use which make it historically valuable.
Dudley Williams and Associates has worked on a number of historic preservation projects, such as structures on military bases constructed in the late 1800s, train depots, opera houses, and theaters. Some of the challenges with these projects have been to determine the types of original construction, match existing materials with variable strengths, repair damage done during previous modifications, and provide adequate structural capacity without removing historical finishes.
